Jail & Prison Oversight Quarterly Forum

Topic: Sleep Deprivation in Prison

Please join NACOLE on March 24, 2026, at 10 - 11 am PDT/1 - 2 pm EDT for our next quarterly online virtual forum for jail and prison oversight (JPO).

This forum will focus on the experience of sleep deprivation in prison—an experience that, although an inherent feature of prison life, has gone almost entirely unnoticed even by those legal scholars, advocates, and policymakers committed to ensuring humane carceral conditions. We will hear a brief presentation from Sharon Dolovich, Professor of Law, Director of UCLA Prison Law and Policy Program, and Director of UCLA Law Behind Bars Data Project, who recently published the first scholarly work to identify and describe sleep deprivation in prison.

The presentation will be followed by Q&A and open discussion facilitated by Amarik Singh, Chair of the NACOLE Jail and Prison Oversight Committee, and Inspector General of the California Office of the Inspector General.

Forum attendees are encouraged to bring specific questions and resources related to the topic as this is an opportunity to exchange insight and suggestions with the JPO community. If you would like to submit a question or a resource in advance, please email [email protected], with attention to Amarik Singh.
