Bonycle Sokunbi

Bonycle Sokunbi embodies what it is to be a life-long dedicated public servant. In courtrooms, classrooms, town halls, and police stations, Bonycle has served her community and upheld the values of accountability, fairness, and civil rights.

Currently, Bonycle holds the position of Independent Police Monitor for the Office of the Police Oversight Monitor for the City of Fort Worth (OPOM). In this role, she is instrumental in providing oversight to the Fort Worth Police Department and communicating key insights to stakeholders, including City Council, police leadership and associations, and the wider community.

Prior to her tenure as Director of OPOM, Bonycle played a pivotal role in reshaping policing practices in New Orleans, Louisiana. Under her leadership, as the Deputy Police Monitor, the New Orleans Police Department adopted more robust standards regarding the use of force, handling civil disturbances, tear gas deployment, and neck holds. Collaborating closely with federal monitors overseeing the Consent Decree, Bonycle contributed to presenting findings to the federal judge and informing reports assessing the police department's compliance.

Bonycle possesses a deep understanding of the far-reaching impact of policing on investigations, court proceedings, and community relations. Drawing from her experience as a former prosecutor and engaged community member, she keenly identifies and addresses discriminatory practices, misconduct, corruption, and excessive use of force within law enforcement agencies.

Graduating from Loyola University New Orleans Law with the Barristers Award for her unbeatable mock trial skills, Bonycle's got a knack for making her case. Even though she's moved on from the courtroom drama, she's still using those skills to help foster community trust and improve law enforcement accountability and transparency.

When not championing transparency and accountability, Bonycle enjoys quality time at home with her husband and two toddlers, engaging in spirited games of hide-and-seek.
