2026 NACOLE Webinar Series (January)

Immigration Detention: Oversight's Forgotten Space?

Tuesday, January 27, 2026
2:00 - 3:00 pm EST - Webinar
3:00 - 3:30 pm EST - Optional Post-webinar Discussion (Only those who attend the live webinar will be able to join the discussion.)

This webinar will address issues relevant to correctional oversight.

Join us for the first NACOLE webinar of 2026, which will delve into the findings of the UK's first statutory inquiry into mistreatment in immigration detention, which culminated in a report to the UK government with 33 recommendations. This webinar will examine questions such as ‘what are the barriers to identifying mistreatment amongst vulnerable populations?’ and ‘what is the right relationship between independent oversight and internal checks and balances?’ Further, the webinar will explore how UK statutory inquiries function as a form of oversight in spaces where people are detained or incarcerated - and what contribution they can make to oversight methodology more generally.
