Why and How More Stringent Foot Pursuit Policies Might Reduce Community Harm
Wednesday, February 18, 2026
3:30 - 4:30 pm ET - Webinar
4:30 - 5:00 pm ET - Optional Post-webinar Discussion (Only those who attend the live webinar will be able to join the discussion.)
This webinar will address issues relevant to police oversight.
Despite the widely accepted view that foot pursuits are inherently dangerous for both police officers and citizens, a minority of municipal police agencies have adopted policies that have the potential to minimize the risk of harm by limiting the circumstances in which police officers are permitted to pursue a subject on foot. This presentation will include an analysis of data related to foot pursuit incidents that supports the premise that broader adoption of foot pursuit policies as well as streamlining and tightening existing policies could reduce the number of foot pursuits that occur thereby diminishing the potential for harm from these incidents. Additionally, because a significant proportion of foot pursuits that culminate in the use of deadly force involve subjects that are either perceived to be armed or are armed in fact, the presentation will illustrate why law enforcement agencies should adopt policy guidance specifically to address this circumstance.
