2026 NACOLE Webinar Series (April)

Lies, Damned Lies & Statistics: How You May Be Misled with Statistics and Flawed Research

Wednesday, April 1, 2026
2:00 - 3:15 pm EDT - Webinar
3:15 - 3:45 pm EDT - Optional Post-webinar Discussion (Only those who attend the live webinar will be able to join the discussion.)

This webinar will address issues relevant to both police and correctional oversight.

This special April Fool’s Day webinar embraces the maxim, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”  This webinar provides the participant with guidelines and cautionary tales for assessing statistical analyses and empirical research reports. While some errors are unintentional, there are many other times when the data is presented in a manner designed to mislead the consumer.  This is specifically for people who have limited experience with statistics and research, NOT statisticians or Ph.D. researchers – while we do welcome them, they should already know this stuff!

We will show how stats and research can be misleading – both inadvertently and on purpose. We will provide simple methods to evaluate stats and research, enhance your “Professional Skeptic” street cred, and provide cautionary tales for your consideration.
