British Columbia Independent Investigations Office to Rely on Civilian Investigators

ON MAY 18, 2011, THE PROVINCIAL government of British Columbia (BC) announced legislation aimed at improving police oversight and increasing its independence from police agencies in BC. Investigations into cases in which a citizen has suffered “serious harm” will be within the jurisdiction of a newly created, civilian-led oversight authority, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO).

CACOLE Update

THE CANADIAN ASSOCIATION FOR Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement (CACOLE) held its annual conference in Canmore, Alberta, from May 30 through June 1, 2011. Canmore, nestled in the majestic Canadian Rockies, saw delegates and presenters from across Canada, the United States and China.
